MARCH 08: THE FIGHT OF WOMEN FOR EQUAL RIGHTS

09 March 2021

More than 100 years have passed and we are still working to eliminate salary gaps between men and women, that a woman is not dismissed for an important position for the simple fact that she can get pregnant, that men are part of the upbringing of their children and have the same time of leave as mothers when their children are born.

Every March 8, Women’s Day is celebrated, a very important day that every woman should celebrate by remembering the reason for this day and paying tribute to the women who started this fight. A fight that continues to this day and little by little receives more support from men, a fight for equal rights and opportunities, a fight to change negative patterns and generate behaviors of mutual respect.

We can go back a bit in time and see that women marched through the streets of Versailles together with men crying out for “freedom, equality and fraternity”, but despite standing up fighting, they realized that the class struggle did not It included them, so they began to formally request political and citizenship rights, from which the Declaration of the Rights of Women and Citizens was born, which is a copy in large part of the fundamental text of the French Revolution, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, within this it is proposed the emancipation of women, equal rights, legal equality and the right to vote, among others.

We can see that women, in the past, were not recognized as citizens, nor people capable of doing any type of work that was not inside the home such as cooking, washing, caring for children and more, there are very important milestones that give rise to this day how the celebration of National Women’s Day in the United States in 1909, in honor of the textile workers’ strike of 1908 in which they protested the harsh working conditions (Chicago and New York). Where 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better working conditions, better wages and voting rights.

In 1910, at the II International Conference of Socialist Women, meeting in Copenhagen, the demand for universal suffrage was reiterated and March 8 is proclaimed as International Women’s Day. The idea was to promote equal rights including the right to vote.

More than 100 years have passed and we are still working to eliminate salary gaps between men and women, that a woman is not dismissed for an important position for the simple fact that she can get pregnant, that men are part of the upbringing of their children and have the same time of leave as mothers when their children are born, we still have many patterns to break and both women and men continue working to achieve this goal, equal treatment of men and women, with the same opportunities and the same responsibilities.

Let’s celebrate this day by remembering the effort and sacrifice of many women so that at this time they can work, vote, choose over themselves and be treated with the same respect as anyone else.
